Typing Tests Still Good Measure Of Skill

When hiring competent office staff, today it's important to utilize more than just the interview process and the resume. Aptitude tests that measure math and computer skills are a must. Personality tests and psychological assessments help in determining the right candidate for your office. Sometimes, however, it's good to go back to an old-fashioned standby - the timed typing test.

A timed typing test helps the employer know how fast a prospective employee can type, how quick they can enter numbers via the keyboard, and how few or how many errors a person makes per so many words. Quickness is as important as accuracy.

First impressions are everything. The first impression an employer gets of the prospective employee is their resume. Is it well written? Is it typed nicely? Is the wording grammatically correct and the spelling accurate? Most of these things are tested in a timed typing test.

Most timed typing tests today are given on the computer. Therefore, knowledge of the keyboard instead of just a typewriter is a must. Further, if the applicant is applying for a position in the accounting field, they will be given a timed test not only for typing words, but also for entering numerical data. This will be handled on the computer keyboard as well.

One of the worst things that can happen to any employer is to have an employee who sends out written work that has punctuation errors, spelling mistakes and errors in grammatical form. These things are an embarrassment, and not only do they make the employee look bad, they make the whole company look bad.

Giving a timed typing test to those potential employees who will be typing projects will help a company avoid such embarrassment. Further, it helps save money and personnel time when something is typed correctly the first time, avoiding having to utilize other staff members to fix the errors or retype the project.

Employees that pass the timed typing test according to the company standards are employees that can fit into the company and complete work in the time allotted on the time frame set for the project at hand. This is all part of the budget given various departments to complete work with only specific amounts of man hours spent on the project.

If a person's typing skills are not up to par, the project will suffer, costing the department more money when more man hours are required to complete the project. The timed typing test being administered to new employees will eliminate these types of errors.
